August Birthday of the Month - Pierre Charles L'Enfant (1754)
The man pictured here is Pierre Charles L'Enfant and today is his birthday. If you are unfamiliar with your U.S. History, L'Enfant was well respected by George Washington. L'Enfant contributed significantly to the design of our nation's capital city, Washington, D.C. You can read more about it on Wikipedia as well as the National Parks Service websites.
If you have yet to visit the city, this website will provide useful information for touring the city. My number one suggestion is to purchase a pass for the Metro. It's one of the more effective public transportation systems I have used. Everything is clean and runs on time. You can get just about everywhere using the Metro.
Make sure to stop in and have a bite to eat at Matchbox. It's a great gourmet pizza bistro that also features a wide selection of beers, wines, and custom vodkas. I had one of the tastiest Maryland crab cake sandwiches in my life on my first visit. I also recommend a glass of Delirium Tremens or an Arrogant Bastard with your meal.
D.C. is a great city, loaded with history. The museums are simply fantastic, especially those from the Smithsonian. Also check out the Spy Museum too. The restaurants are great, there's always a concert or show. They have a number of pro-sports franchises (and the Redskins, zing!) to spend an afternoon at the ballpark, arena, or stadium.
There are only so many national capitals in the world, pay this one a visit when you can.
