The Fall of the Middle Class

I want to make sure this clip makes into the Internet archives. In a hundred years after society has collapsed around us, I want some destitute freedom fighter to stumble upon some long-forgotten data center. Then they will understand why everything in the future sucks.

And I also wanted to throw this one out there. Remember, this clip is almost 20 years old at this point.

R.I.P. Bill. We need more folks like you around.

R.I.P. Bubba Smith.

Bubba Smith has passed away. As a huge fan of Police Academy growing up, Hightower was one of my favorite characters. He was a giant, and didn't take any shit from the asshole sergeant. But he had a soft and mushy inside. From what I have read, this is what he was like in real life. He is one of my favorite scenes from Police Academy, showing both how helpful he wanted to be and his somewhat over-the-top strength.

It wasn't until I was much older that I learned he had actually established himself playing football. First he played for the Spartans of Michigan State, and was then drafted by the Colts in '67. He went #1 overall and won a SuperBowl with the Colts. Not too shabby of a career. After I had learned the football background of Smith it made this following clip far more relevant to me.

Rest in Peace, Bubba Smith. You were a pretty cool guy just for Police Academy, but being a badass football player doesn't hurt either.

Please, Register to Vote!

There have been many historical political upheavals around the world this year. Some of them peaceful, some of them violent. For those of us fortunate enough to live in a country in which the vote of the citizens are taken seriously, it is important as citizens to vote. If you vote, as far as I am concerned, you are allowed to complain and gripe about your government as often you want. If you don't vote, shut up.

If you live in the U.S. and are not registered to vote, you can start here to find information. You can also take a look at ProjectVote. For readers outside of the U.S. a few minutes on a search engine should turn up some local election information. There is an "www.elections.org.XX" where "XX" represents your local country code. Give that a shot, hopefully it will turn up some useful data. If you have links to specific places that you want to share, please post them in the comments.

Even if you have registered, make sure your address is correct. Some laws also require you to be registered with one of the major U.S. parties in order to vote in primary elections. Since the concept of voting has been around, corrupt people attempted to manipulate those votes. Make sure everything is in order, and get ready for your next election.

I will re-post this reminder every two weeks until the upcoming November elections in the U.S. After that, it will be a monthly post. It is important that each citizen exercise their rights and responsibilities!

So long, Randy Moss...

While I can't exactly defend all of his craziness off the field, for the most part I think Randy Moss got a bad rep. Some of it was earned no doubt, but some people just need to get off his jock. He was easily one of the top 10-15 best receivers in the NFL, ever, end of story. Take a look at his record setting season in this clip.

I had both Tom Brady and Randy Moss on my Yahoo fantasy football team that year and still lost! 73 TDs between the two of them in a fantasy football season! WTF!? How does that happen!

Randy Moss should have originally went to Notre Dame but he attended my alma mater of FSU before his shenanigans got him sent to Marshall. Had he stayed, he would have lined up on the opposite side of my favorite college football player ever: Peter Warrick. The 'Noles would have been absolutely unstoppable, instead of just regular unstoppable, with both those guys on the field.

I hope you change your mind Randy and come back. Maybe the Eagles will pick you up on the cheap. Would a 1-year, minimum contract be worth another great shot at a ring? You are most likely going into the Hall of Fame regardless, but a ring would give you a shot at first ballot. Either way, best of luck in the future. True football fans realize what you brought to the field, and it will be missed.

My Vices: Pancakes & Fast Internet

My dad always made pancakes as I was growing up. It was always one of my favorites. As an "adult" I am still the pancake addict. I can eat them by the dozens. Ricky Bobby even had his arm broken to show his love of pancakes. I will have an update showing how to make some kick-ass 'cakes at home in the near future.

A recent late night craving for the butter smothered taste of stacks of fluffy, syrup drowned pancakes took me to IHOP. Famous Amos is a popular local option, but I enjoy the variety available at IHOP. IHOP is running a promo right now, join their mailing list here. They're offering a free breakfast platter for sign up, and I've received my first coupon.

(Side note: as a freshman I worked one shift at a Denny's so I tend to avoid them, even though they are under newer managment since that time.)

While waiting for my food, I decided to give in to my smartphone addiction. Like many the world over, I am hooked. I have an Android-based smartphone and this IHOP had wi-fi available. It was a match made in heaven. One of my favorite programs is the mobile version of Speedtest.net. This first picture shows the results of one of the tests I ran at IHOP.

As you can see that speed is great for free wi-fi. Granted, I was most likely the only person accessing the network that early in the morning. I don't expect more than 15-20 people at the most over an hour stay will use access wi-fi. If you're looking for a place to play some late night Quake it's worth a shot. If you actually travel on business and need a place to work and eat give IHOP a shot. This tale takes a sad turn, however, when I returned home to do some comparisons.

As you can see, it's almost 4Mbp/s slower. I have Clearwire at home, usually they are much faster. My real average at home is around 3Mpb/s down and 0.5Mbp/s up. It's not spectacular, both the DSL and cable options available here are much faster. I am trying to do my part to boycott them for crap business practices. Do some research on the stranglehold the telcos and cable companies have on our communications options. Vote with your dollar (if they are worth anything after this whole debt debacle).

Stay tuned, my own pancake cooking update is coming soon. If you have any suggestions or comments, please let me know. Thanks for reading!
